A look back at the many mathematical accomplishments made in the 2024-25 school year

Congratulations to ÂÌñÉç’s math team for their extraordinary successes this year! Here is a summary of the impressive results that ÂÌñÉç’s mathletes have achieved in the 2024-2025 school year:

Middle School:

In the fall, ÂÌñÉç’s middle school math team qualified for the Division IIB bracket in the Math Madness Competition, a tournament modelled after college basketball’s March Madness. ÂÌñÉç’s team came out on top of the 43 team bracket.

In January, students competed in the RW^3 Friendly Math Competition, a local tournament organized by high school students from ÂÌñÉç and three other schools. ÂÌñÉç’s team won the team component of the competition, with Jonathan W., Adam D., Matthew Z., and Maxim S. placing among the top ten students.

In January, students also competed in the AMC 8, a nationwide math competition for middle school students. Jonathan W. got a perfect score, while both Jonathan W. and Adam D. made the Honor Roll with Distinction, ranking in the top 1% of students. Additionally, Matthew Z. made the Honor Roll, ranking in the top 5% of students.

In February, students competed in the MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competition, and the ÂÌñÉç team, consisting of Adam D., Jonathan W., Matthew Z., and Maxim S. took 1st place. In the written competition, Jonathan W. got 1st place, Adam D. got 2nd place, and Matthew Z. got 8th place. In the exciting fast-paced Countdown Round, Matthew went head-to-head against all of the students who placed higher than him in the written round, and he bested all of them except for Jonathan, moving up to 2nd place. Marc G. and Sophia Z. also performed well, qualifying for the state competition.

In March, six ÂÌñÉç students competed in the MATHCOUNTS State Competition, and the ÂÌñÉç team took 2nd place. Jonathan W. got 1st place and Adam D. got 4th place in the written competition, and they earned spots to represent Utah at the MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Washington D.C.

In April, Adam D. and Jonathan W. competed as part of a six-person team of students from Utah in the middle school Purple Comet Math Meet. Their team received a perfect score, one of only six teams in the world to do so.

In May, Adam D. and Jonathan W. competed in the MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Washington D.C., representing Utah as part of a four-person team. This team tied Utah’s best ever performance, getting 4th place out of 56 states and territories. Jonathan was among the top 20 students nationwide, and Adam was among the top 50 students. The team’s performance gained them recognition as the Most Improved Team.

The Middle School Math club was coached by Upper School students Kiran R., Fiona J., and Jerry X., and supervised by math teacher Hiram Golze.

Upper School:

In November, Kiran R., Liam R., and Jonathan W. competed as part of a six-person team of students from Utah in the Berkeley Math Tournament at UC Berkeley, competing against teams from California and across the west coast. The team took 5th place out of around 200 teams. Liam placed 1st on the Calculus test and 4th on the Algebra test, while Kiran placed 7th on the Discrete test.

In November, many ÂÌñÉç students took the AMC 10 and AMC 12 tests. Nine ÂÌñÉç students scored highly enough to qualify for the American Invitational Math Exam (AIME), which is one of the highest numbers of students to ever qualify for this test in a given year from ÂÌñÉç.

In February, Kiran R., Liam R., and Jonathan W. competed as part of an eight-person team of students from Utah in the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament in Boston. This is widely recognized as one of the hardest math competitions that are open to any student to take in high school, involving top students from across the country (and even from across the world). The team took 22nd place overall. In the individual portion of the competition, Liam took 19th place, and Kiran took 36th place. Liam also took 2nd place in the Integration Bee, facing off against other students in a head-to-head competition in front of hundreds of students.

In March, many ÂÌñÉç students took the Utah State Math Contest, hosted by UVU. In the Junior test, Jonathan W. got a perfect score, earning 1st place, while Adam D. earned 5th place, Ryan J. earned 7th place, and Matthew Z. earned 10th place. ÂÌñÉç’s team received 2nd place in the team awards. In the Senior test, Kiran R. and Liam R. both got perfect scores, tying for 1st place. Additionally, Fiona J. earned 5th place, and Lisa S. earned 12th place. ÂÌñÉç’s team received 1st place in the team awards.

In March, Kiran R. and Liam R. took the USA Math Olympiad, and Jonathan W. took the USA Junior Math Olympiad. Less than five hundred students nationwide qualify to take these difficult tests, with just four of them from Utah. Jonathan earned Honors for his performance, placing him in the top 60 students on the Junior Math Olympiad. Furthermore, Liam earned a Gold Medal for his outstanding performance on the USAMO, one of just 20 students across the country to do so. Liam will be recognized at the Mathematical Association of America’s annual MathFest in August for this honor.

In April, Kiran R., Liam R., and Jonathan W. competed as a part of a team of eight Utah students in the Stanford Math Tournament Online. The team was awarded the 10th place overall team, achieving 2nd place in the Power Round, 4th place in the Team Round, and 5th Place in the Guts Round. In addition, Liam received 1st place on the Discrete test and 2nd Place on the Calculus test.

In April, Kiran R., Liam R., and Jonathan W. competed as a part of a team of six Utah students in the ARML Local competition. The team received 3rd place out of 113 teams nationwide. Liam won 1st place in the individual competition.

In April, Adam D., Fiona J., Ryan J., Kiran R., Liam R., and Jonathan W. represented ÂÌñÉç in the high school Purple Comet Math Meet. As a team, they tied for 3rd place nationwide out of 313 teams.

Additionally, in January, ÂÌñÉç math teacher Hiram Golze was named a 2024 national winner of the Edyth May Sliffe Award, thanks to the many students who nominated him. Their appreciation for his dedication and impact made this recognition possible. The Edyth May Sliffe Awards for Distinguished Mathematics Teaching in Middle School and High School are given annually to middle and high school mathematics teachers who have done outstanding work to motivate students in mathematics by participating in one of the MAA American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) competitions.

Congratulations to the students on ÂÌñÉç’s math team for their great achievements this year!
