Ravens Athletics had strong Winter seasons, with moments of triumph, growth, and disappointment. Here is a quick wrap-up of our winter sports, collected from our coaches.
The ÂÌñÉç Men's Basketball Team had a remarkable season. The team completed a challenging preseason with a 7-5 record, which included invitations to the 2A Preview Tournament in Richfield and the Steve Hodson Classic Tournament in Cedar City. The team came into form during Region play, going 7-1 and winning a Region Championship for the first time in 7 years. The Region Championship included two dominating wins over rival Rowland Hall and an emotional home win over LCA. The team continued to shine throughout an impressive run in the State Tournament. The team showed grit and heart in each round, and simply found a way to win. They beat Manti in the round of 16, 54-50, held on to beat South Summit 53-49 in the quarterfinals and executed an impressive come from behind victory in the Semifinal game against North Summit, eventually winning 59-55. Ultimately, the team fell short in the Championship game against LCA, but the team left the tournament feeling proud of their tournament performance, knowing that they represented themselves, their school, and their families well.
The team was lead by eight committed Seniors and coached by Ryan Judd. The team will return with many skilled young players, who have the potential to keep ÂÌñÉç as State Championship contenders for years to come. Three ÂÌñÉç players were selected to the All-State Teams. Xander Priskos and Jackson Sponaugle were both selected to the First Team, and Parker Law was selected to the Third Team.
The Women’s Basketball team was comprised of a special group of 13 dedicated student-athletes. While many were young and inexperienced, their efforts and drive to improve throughout the season were exemplary. The team finished their season with a record of 6-13, still managing to achieve their #1 goal of the season by qualifying for the State tournament. The team was led by senior All-Region members Jess Olsen and Lexie Shreeve, who provided great leadership throughout the season.
Highlights of the season included a State Tournament game against the eventual 2A state runner-up Emery HS. As always, it’s sad to say goodbye to our Seniors: Jess Olsen, Lexie Shreeve, Jamie Francis, Imogen Stegman, Kara Rasmussen and Maddie Duke. Thank you for your dedication to the program, and for your leadership. The returning girls are poised to take the next steps in growing our program and we look forward to a great 2017-18 season.
We combined teams for the State following league play, suiting all ÂÌñÉç Players to enter the State Tournament.
