Home Community Blog World Languages at ÂÌñÉç

After a solid foundation from the Middle School’s Latin program, students are able to choose a modern language to study in the Upper School at ÂÌñÉç, with a minimum requirement of 3 years of course work.  We try to cultivate life-long language learners at ÂÌñÉç, and many of our students opt to study their language for all four years of high school. Language choices include Chinese, French, or Spanish, with a Latin elective option in Class IX.

ÂÌñÉç’s world language programs welcome all levels of learners, from beginners to students with previous experience in the classroom or at home. Occasionally, a placement test is necessary to determine the suitable level or class for a student.  All Upper School language programs offer Honors classes and AP courses, once a student reaches a sufficient level of proficiency. Post-AP opportunities are also available.

At each stage of learning, students build essential listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, through class activities and regular home practice, so they are able to grow into well-rounded communicators. Students are encouraged and supported by passionate, experienced educators who are often multi-language learners themselves. Teachers provide a fun and welcoming environment to allow students to take risks in a safe classroom environment, while holding them to high learning standards. There are also regular cultural activities to help students explore the world beyond their own study routines, so they feel connected to other communities and become responsible global citizens.

Studying a world language engages the brain in unique and powerful ways. It helps students develop empathy, perspective, critical thinking, and creativity. We truly believe that learning about others helps students reflect on their own language and culture. We are especially gratified to see many of our students able to continue their ÂÌñÉç language work after graduation in a university environment.
