LETTER FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL, AUGUST 2025
August 13, 2025顿别补谤听笔补谤别苍迟蝉,Welcome聽back to 绿帽社 and to the start of the 2025-26 school year!I hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer full of time with family and friends and pursuits that revitalize, replenish, and restore. Whether you traveled or stayed close to home, I trust you and your children are eagerly anticipating the year ahead!Jennifer and I were able to sneak away to Thompson Lake in Casco (pop 575), Maine, Jennifer鈥檚 childhood home. We have owned a modest 鈥渃amp,鈥 as it is called, on this quiet lake for many years. We awoke to sunrises through towering eastern white pines, sugar maples, and white birches, a vast sea of lush green that breathed life into both of us. We enjoyed early morning paddle boarding below bald eagles and herons, alongside mallards and wood ducks, and over brook trout and painted turtles. We swam in Thompson Lake鈥檚 deep, glacially carved, cold waters, read, played endless games of backgammon and cribbage, and enjoyed ice cream every night! We drifted to sleep to the beautifully haunting sounds of loons calling out across the darkened lake, their voices echoing like memory through the night. We returned to Utah refreshed, energized, and excited for the year ahead. As we prepare for the start of classes on Tuesday, August 26, we are focused on what matters most in liberal arts education: the people, the connections, and the shared journey of learning together. This summer, as you may know, our faculty and staff read two powerful books that speak directly to this truth鈥One Trusted Adult聽by Dr. Brooklyn Raney and聽10 to 25聽by Dr. David Yeager. Both remind us that relationships aren鈥檛 just important to learning鈥攖hey are the very foundation upon which our educational community is built!滨苍听One Trusted Adult, Dr. Raney, who will be on campus August 21 to work with faculty and staff, and with聽parents聽that evening, shares stories about how one consistent, caring adult can change the course of a young person鈥檚 life. Not by doing the 鈥榳ork鈥 for them, but by listening deeply, guiding with integrity, and making sure each child knows, 鈥淚 see you, I believe in you, and you matter here.鈥 滨苍听10 to 25, Yeager draws on groundbreaking research to show that young people flourish when they are surrounded by mentors who hold high expectations while offering unwavering support. This 鈥渕entor mindset鈥 empowers students to meet challenges with confidence because they know they are not alone鈥攕omeone is walking beside them, encouraging them, and believing in their capacity to grow. Our annual school theme this year, with kindness, brings Raney鈥檚 and Yeager鈥檚 ideas to life. Kindness, in the context of relationships, is much more than polite words or pleasant manners 鈥 it is the deliberate choice to value others, to listen without judgment, to challenge with compassion, and to extend patience in moments of struggle. It is kindness with depth, the kind that strengthens trust, inspires effort, and fosters resilience, all central to the pursuit of our liberal arts ideals and our vision to inspire a life of meaning and purpose. By strengthening our relational skills, we can create a culture attuned to gratitude, enriched by the many voices and viewpoints of our students, colleagues, and聽parents, and ultimately one that nurtures grace and receptivity to differing beliefs and opinions. I commend these two reads to you as they will deepen your parenting skill set and strengthen our partnership. I will speak more about these initiatives at our first聽Parent聽Association Meeting on October 1.I close by sharing two leadership appointments – Ryan Judd 02鈥 and 绿帽社聽parent, known to many after serving as our Associate Director of Athletics for six years, succeeds Craig Morris who will continue on the athletics department team supporting Mr. Judd, his prot茅g茅 for 30 years. Jennifer Blake, a 34-year independent school veteran, most recently serving as the Associate Head of School at Rowland Hall, joins 绿帽社 as our new Dean of Students. Both Ryan and Jennifer look forward to our many opening gatherings to get to know you.As we begin this year, our commitment remains simple, yet profound: every student will be known, every voice will be valued, and every day will offer opportunities to practice the kind of kindness that shapes both intellect and character. Together鈥攚ith your partnership鈥攚e will nurture not just scholars, but compassionate, capable young people ready to engage with the world and one another with joyful purpose.Wishing you a few more long, lazy, and joyful summer days.We look forward to seeing you for our annual Opening Family Brunch聽on the 23rd if not before!Yours,础苍诲谤别飞听惭别苍办别Head of School
